MARATHROPOLOGY
Academic Research and Creative Arts Grant, Silpakorn University Research and Development Institute, 2013
The creative project titled “Marathropology” aims to generate a new style of drawing, in which connects practical techniques between two creative fields, visual art and scientific illustration. The study focuses on various drawing techniques and supporting materials that illustrators in western scientific field had been used from 15th to 17th centuries. Results from the analysis are adapted to create art pieces for the project.
Creation of five conceptual drawings apply the principle of appropriation (one of the principle methods of post modernism). Drawings imitate all together five medical, and anatomical illustrations produced by five medical physicians, e.g.: Andreas Vesalius, Charles Estienne, Giulio Cesare Casseri, Govaert Bidloo, and Juan Valverde de Amusco. The chosen illustrations are combined with imagination of the researcher, trying to study and document human stories. Conceptions of all drawing pieces engage with social critic on human negative behaviors.
This creative project proceeds by gathering documented and pictorial data, also observing from anatomical museum. Data analysis and summary are completed by descriptive document and making artworks. The conclusion of the project are fallowing:
1. Five conceptual drawings produce by silverpoint and graphite techniques on paper together with concepts of scientific illustrations, e.g., drawings in formation of correctness and realistic style, specification of details for objects in the artwork.
2. Technical characters of western scientific illustrations produced from 15th–17th centuries consist of: 1) realism is less correctness; 2) the presentation of image is descriptive symbolism; 3) composition of corpse and skeleton are lifelike; 4) the proportion of corpses follows the classical style; 5) pictorial backgrounds incline to render either outdoor or indoor locations; 6) textual description for picture is arranged in framed format similar to informative board; and 7) although hatching techniques show individual artist’s craftmanship, especially in academic style, but overall reveals primitive expression.
3. According to theme and concept, materials or objects used in scientific process are combined with drawings. It is not only distinguishing the relationship between art and sceince, but also enhancing interestedness for artworks.to edit.
